The main aim of the study is to highlight the role that political
leaders play, and the ways in which their roles change, in countries
moving from intense violence to the pains of reconciliation and confidence-building.
It also aims to provide a better theoretical understanding of the
role of political leadership in divided societies. As well as providing
a valuable insight into the thinking and rationale behind the men
and women who are charged with running our affairs, the main objective
is to provide policy makers and practitioners with the insight needed
to deal with political leaders on a day to day basis. For those societies
who have not yet taken 'the road less travelled' and embarked on a
process of peace making and building, it will also act as an indicator
of what to expect from their parties, politicians, and leaders.
This study will offer a better understanding of those in power for
other politicians, policy makers, and the international and local
non-governmental organisations, who will have to liase with the new
bureaucrats.
