INCORE: Policy and Evaluation: LILP

Realism of the Past

LILP held a workshop on its 'Realism of the Past' stream on 24th August 2001, at UNU/INCORE in Derry/Londonderry.

How post conflict societies deal with the past is an important questions both from a policy and practitioner perspective consequently the day was broken into two sessions:

The stream also facilitated an exchange visit to Vukovar in Croatia, hosted by the Vukovar Institute for Peace Research and Education (VIMIO).

Realism of the Past - The German Experience

    • Lars Colschen, Research Group on German Affairs, Centre for Applied Policy Research, Germany
    • Michael Weigl, Research Group on German Affairs, Centre for Applied Policy Research, Germany

The speakers provided an overview of the approaches and strategies which have been implemented in Germany since the Second World War, highlighting some of the problems which have arisen in the use of history at a policy level, and including recommendations on how history can be successfully drawn upon in the policy context. They also addressed the current context in Germany, and the problems that have arisen in terms of creating 'inner unity' and reconciliation.

This three hour training session examined conceptual and practical tools for dealing with the past. The workshop was designed to focus on proven, sustainable skills that are most relevant to building mutually beneficial relationships, dealing with conflicts, and learning from the past to improve the present and future.
