School of Oriental and African Studies
Information about the one-year MSc, Violence, Conflict and Development. This new programme responds to the increasing significance of various types of conflict in developing countries, including civil wars and complex humanitarian emergencies. European University Center for Peace Studies (EPU)
The EPU is based in Stadtschlaining, a small town situated about 120 km south of Vienna, and 100 km north of Graz in Austria. It offers an MA in Peace and Conflict Studies.The EPU also offers a one semester program that focuses on the analysis of conflicts, their underlying causes and their actual evolution, as well as examining issues of peace building, international co-operation and development.

  • Graduate University for Advanced Studies: the National Museum of Ethnology
    The Graduate University for Advanced Studies which was established by 14 inter-university research institutions, has four schools for postgraduate doctoral education. One of these schools, the School of Cultural and Social Studies, has two departments (Regional Studies and Comparative Studies) which are run by the National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka. The departments offer supervision for students who wish to research in ethnic conflict, ethnic minority problems and nationalism issues especially from an anthropological perspective.

  • Hiroshima City University: The Faculty of International Studies
    The Faculty holds International Politics Course for undergraduate students. As one of the main subjects of the course, Peace Studies is coordinated by academic staffs of the Hiroshima Peace Institute, which is associated with the University.   • Hosei University
    The Hosei University runs lectures in military and peace studies, ethnicity issues, and psychology of peace studies at the Department of Politics, the Faculty of Law. At the Faculty of Intercultural Communication, there are lectures in nation-state and ethnicity, conflict and ethnicity, peace studies and intercultural communication. Both faculties offer BA degree programmes. The Hosei Graduate School of Social Sciences offers Master and Doctoral degrees in these related subjects.   • International Christian University (ICU): Rotary Peace Center
    The Center was established by the International Christian University in Tokyo with the cooperation of Rotary International in the U.S. It is one of seven Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution around the world. The Center accepts 10 scholars to study for a Masters degree in peace studies, focusing on international conflict resolution. They will enrol at ICU in one of the three divisions of the Graduate School: the Divisions of Education, Public Administration or Comparative Culture.

    The College of International Relations at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto offers BA, MA and Ph.D. programmes.     Soka University, Tokyo, emphasises on Peace Education for undergraduate students and promotes Peace Studies through one of the University’s institutes, the Soka University Peace Research Institute (SUPRI), which undertakes peace education and research.     The Graduate School of Area and Culture Studies at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies will launch a new Master program called "Peace and Conflict Studies" from April 2004.   • Waseda University: The Open Education Center (Theme Collage “Peace Studies”)
    Founded as an inter-departmental organization of undergraduate schools at the Waseda University in Tokyo, the Open Education Center organises several theme collage courses including “Peace Studies”. Peace Studies College consists of one year lectures such as “An introduction to Peace Studies”, "Development: Its Implication on Peace”, "Peace by the Law", and "War and peace in the images".
