CEPACS RECEIVES AAU GRANT OF USD
175,000
The Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (CEPACS), University of
Ibadan, has received a grant of one hundred and seventy-five thousand
American Dollars (USD) 175,000) from the Association of African Universities
(AAU) for the purpose of implementing the activities and achieving
the outcomes described in the newly designed proposal on Master's
in Humanitarian and Refugee Studies (MHRS) Degree Programme submitted
by CEPACS in March, 2001 . The MHRS Programme is designed for meeting
some of the most urgent needs on contemporary Africa's human security
agenda in the area of armed conflicts, humanitarian crisis and intervention,
and refugee management.
The Programme is specifically tailored towards meeting the professional
needs of individuals, groups, and agencies implicated in humanitarian
work and conflict management, including armed forces personnel, government
and policy makers, international humanitarian agencies, local and
international NGOs, scholars and researchers, media executives and
human rights activists.
A letter of award
of the MU grant to CEPACS was presented to the Vice-Chancellor,
Professor Ayodele Falase, by the AAU's Senior Programme Officer
and Coordinator of Regional Cooperation in Graduate Training & Research,
Professor G.O.S. Ekhaguere, who had travelled from Accra, Ghana,
to formally present the award on Tuesday, April 17, 2001.
Joining the Vice-Chancellor at the presentation ceremony were also
the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor 0. Ofi, the
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor J.A. Akinwunmi, the Registrar,
Chief (Mrs.) Mojisola Ladipo, JP, and the Bursar, Alhaji J.A. Bankole.
The CEPACS team
was led by the Centre's Foundation Director, Professor J. Bayo
Adekanye, and a few members of the Board of Fellows, Professor
Eghosa Osaghae, Dr. Mrs.) Helen Osinowo, Dr. (Mrs.) Adefunmoke
Afolayan, and Dr. O.C. Adesina. Speaking at the brief, early-morning
presentation ceremony, the AAU Senior Programme Officer and Coordinator
of Regional Cooperation in Graduate Training & Research, Professor
Ekhaguere, insisted that the University of Ibadan and CEPACS agree
with the MU not to use the grant for any purpose other than that
for which the grant is made.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Falase, assured that the
grant will be put to good and accountable use, and thanked the visiting
official, Professor Ekhaguere, for the confidence the AAU has in the
ability of the University of Ibadan in delivering good quality programme
of graduate education and training. Other principal officers present
re-echoed the same sentiments. On his part, the CEPACS Director, Professor
Adekanye, said he and his colleagues were committed to developing
CEPACS into a major Regional Research, Training, and Resource Centre
drawing its students, scholars and researchers, as well as resource
persons from all over the African continent and indeed other parts
of the world.
