Europe
and Peace: President Romano Prodi at UU/INCORE – April
1 2004.
With the EU weeks away from the accession of ten new member states,
President of the European Commission Romano Prodi delivered a major
speech on the challenges facing Europe in the current global security
environment.
His wide-ranging address analysed the changing dynamics of peace,
security and international relations since the Treaty of Westphalia
in 1648. He examined the drift that lead to the destruction of Europe
in the Second World War, and the creation of the European Union in
its aftermath, before turning his attention to contemporary international
politics.
President Prodi
was speaking as part of the Peace Lecture series under 1998 Nobel
Laureate Prof. John Hume’s tenure as Tip O’Neill
Chair in Peace Studies.
President Prodi, who was welcomed to the University by the Vice Chancellor,
the Provost of Magee, and Professor John Hume, also paid tribute to
the peacebuilding work of Professor Hume.
