FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS - INTERNSHIPS |
| |
| 1.
ARE INCORE INTERNS PAID FOR THEIR WORK? |
INCORE is unable to give any financial support to interns, who work
on an entirely voluntary basis. Travel costs and living expenses
must be borne by the interns themselves or by a sponsoring institution.
|
| |
| 2.
ARE THERE ANY CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNS AT INCORE? |
INCORE welcomes interns of all nationalities who have a valid UK visa,
if they need one.. Interns are responsible for making their own
travel arrangements and for obtaining visas, but members of INCORE
staff will help as much as possible with information about accommodation
and travel within Northern Ireland.

| |
| 3.
WILL I NEED A WORK PERMIT? |
Unless an intern intends to take a part-time job to cover living expenses
etc, he or she should not require a work permit, as there is no
remuneration for the post.
|
| |
| 4.
WHAT ARE THE APPLICATION PRCEDURES? |
See
the applications page.
|
| |
| 5.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE AN INTERN? |
Participants in the internship programme are selected from students
and holders of graduate level degrees in disciplines related to
the work of the work of INCORE, e.g. International Relations, Political
Science, Psychology, History, Social Sciences, Anthropology etc.
Preference will be given to those, within these disciplines, who
have knowledge in the field of ethnic conflict and its resolution,
and whose specialities correspond with current INCORE interests.
Typically, interns do not have previous working experience of this
nature. Applicants must have a good command of the English language.

| 6.
HOW LONG DO INTERNSHIPS LAST? |
Ideally an internship should last at least 3 months, which allows the
volunteer to get a good idea of how an organisation such as INCORE
operates, and also to undertake and complete a number of useful
tasks. In exceptional cases interns may stay for only a few weeks,
but most stay for a semester, and we have had placement students
who have been with us for a full academic year.
|
| |
| 7.
ARE THERE SPECIAL DATES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WHEN APPLICATIONS
MUST BE SUBMITTED OR INTERNSHIPS BEGIN AND END? |
We now accept interns throughout the year, and there are no special
start and end dates for terms of office, nor are there deadlines
for applications.

There are two very useful sources of information on travelling to Northern
Ireland on the University of Ulster's web site and also on our
own web site. Please visit http://www.ulst.ac.uk/accommodation/travel.html.
Overseas students will also find some very useful information at http://www.ulster.ac.uk/international/handbook/index.html

| 9.
HOW WILL I FIND ACCOMMODATION? |
The University of Ulster has a very good accommodation office in the
Student Services division, which controls lists of rented rooms,
and external accommodation as well as the university's own student
residences. Contact Gareth Kennedy at GJ.Kennedy@ulst.ac.uk and

WHAT KIND OF DUTIES ARE INTERNS EXPECTED TO CARRY OUT? |
Interns are assigned to a member of INCORE's academic or administrative
staff, although they may be required to assist other members of
staff as required. They are involved, amongst other things, in:
researching a wide variety of issues, literature reviews, investigating
sources of funding, providing substantive and technical servicing
of meetings, assisting with organising conferences, assisting with
publications, fact-finding etc., as well as supporting other INCORE
activities. If an intern is allocated to either the CAIN project
(Conflict Archive on the Internet) or the INCORE Conflict
Data Service, technical training will be provided. Clerical
duties should make up no more than 20% of your time. Each intern
will be issued with a Memorandum of Agreement, which will indicate
their likely duties. Any academic input to a project or publication
made by an intern will be suitably acknowledged.
