Bursaries: INCORE Summer School 17-21 June 2013

INCORE International Summer School 17-21 June 2013

Bursaries available for Northern Ireland community relations practitioners

Application Deadline 10 June 2013 (to be received by 9am)

INCORE has received funding from the Community Relations Council for 10 bursaries for Northern Ireland community relations practitioners to attend our International Summer School. Places are available on the following modules:

Culture and Peacebuilding
Dr Stephen Ryan and Professor Brandon Hamber (INCORE)

In 2013 Londonderry/Derry is going to be the UK City of Culture.  It therefore seems appropriate that INCORE will offer a new module on Culture and Peacebuilding as part of its Summer School during this year.  Following a general overview of the relationships between culture and peace and an investigation of some key theories in this field, there will be a day each devoted to drama, sport and the moving image and their contribution to peacebuilding.  The module will focus on experiential learning and use a range of contributors including academics and practitioners  from Northern Ireland, and participants will also have an opportunity to make presentations about their own work  or that of their organizations.

Peacemaking and Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland
Professor Gillian Robinson and Dr. Brendan Lynn (INCORE)

This module is aimed specifically at undergraduates or individuals interested in exploring the lessons from Northern Ireland in terms of peacemaking and peacebuilding. Through a series of lectures and workshops with INCORE staff and invited speakers participants will be able to examine some of the key themes and issues for themselves. The subject matter to be covered will include an introduction to conflict transformation and peacebuilding theory; peacemaking and the new political disposition in Northern Ireland; justice, truth and reconciliation; victims, survivors and commemoration; and public opinion and attitudinal change in Northern Ireland.

To date, numerous international applicants from over 10 countries, from a diverse range of organisations have confirmed their attendance. We would very much encourage potential Northern Ireland participants to apply as our international participants benefit enormously from your expertise. Evaluations from previous Summer Schools have highlighted the value of this international networking.

More about our Summer School visit: http://www.incore.ulst.ac.uk/courses/ss/. Detailed programmes can also be requested from school@incore.ulst.ac.uk.

Selection will be based on the following criteria:

Essential:

  • Education to degree level and/or significant work experience in peace and conflict related areas.
  • Resident in Northern Ireland.
  • Work in the voluntary or community sector in community relations.

Desirable:

  • Education at undergraduate/post graduate level in peace and conflict related studies.

We will prioritise applications from applicants who have not attended previous INCORE Summer Schools but those who have already attended are also welcome to apply.

Those applying for a bursary must commit to attending for the full week.

The bursary covers tuition fees and accommodation (if required). Accommodation is provided for six nights from Sunday 16 June until Friday 21 June (inclusive) in University of Ulster student accommodation. Participants will be staying in an ensuite room in self-catering apartments with a shared kitchen and dining area. The apartments are situated in the University of Ulster Student Village, Duncreggan.

For further details please click on the accommodation section of the University of Ulster's web page at: http://www.accommodation.ulster.ac.uk/prostumag.html

Please indicate on the application form whether or not you will require accommodation. Please note in Section C that you are applying for a bursary, and mark payment as ‘Cheque’ (note this is nominal, simply for form completing purposes). Also ignore all deadline dates on application form as this was for non-bursary applicants

Deadline for completed applications is Monday 10 June with notification of decision by Tuesday 11 June.
